By the turn of the twentieth century, the clarinet had established itself as a versatile classical musical instrument, gaining favour with many contemporary composers. But not until the evolution of jazz has the instrument been given the freedom to explore it’s wide ranging dynamics and tonal qualities.
The clarinet has played an invaluable role in the development and history of jazz, being an important front-line instrument in bands of the 1910’s and 1920’s and rapidly becoming iconic during the swing era of the 1930’s and 40’s. It’s popularity has continued until the present day. Although for much of the last 70 years the clarinet has been eclipsed by the saxophone as the woodwind instrument of choice, the clarinet can still be heard in all forms of jazz and is performed by some of the world’s most influential musicians.
This site is dedicated to the music and musicians who continue to keep jazz alive with this most beguiling and flexible of jazz instruments.. the clarinet.
